Queen of the Underworld

Art by Gail Godwin

I couldn’t resist including a few drawings. I keep a jar of colored pencils by my bed and often draw before I go to sleep or when I can’t get to sleep.  Little pictures of things I remember, or am trying to remember. (Drawing has often assisted memory.)  Or the prevailing mood of the day.  Or my dreams -- and nightmares.  Or a fantasy or concept (such as the Web site Genie appearing to the author).  I also draw when I am baffled about some aspect of a character.  Making a visual image of that character in action (such as evangelist Grace Munger getting her instructions from God in Evensong) almost always reveals something new.
